In Conversation with Alex Maitland

Posted On: 03 Feb 2022

During the past two years where the lines between work life and home life greatly blurred, we probably all got to know our colleagues a lot more through countless video calls. Here at KHT our people really make a difference, both for clients and within the local community through our charity work. So we felt it timely to let you get to know them a little better.

In the first of our ‘In conversation with’ series, we introduce Trust and Company Administrator, Alex Maitland. Alex was born and educated on the Isle of Man, and was awarded with a STEP Global Excellence Award 3 years ago for achieving the highest score in his Trust Creation: Law & Practice exam. Read on to learn more about his role and aspirations for 2002 – both within his personal and professional life.

Q1:  What do you do at KHT?

I joined Knox House Trust in November 2020 as a Trust & Company Administrator within their busy Private Client Team, having previously spent five years working for a leading wealth management firm.

Q2:  What do you love most about your role?

I love how varied my role is – no two days are ever the same. I also enjoy the responsibility that working at KHT has provided me, really allowing me to take strides with my career.

Q3:  What has been your greatest achievement in your first year with KHT?

My greatest achievement at KHT is probably split between taking on responsibility for a portfolio of Marine & Aviation clients and completing last year’s FATCA/CRS reporting for KHT. I’ve worked hard to maintain & build on the good client relationships created over the years at KHMA. Understanding the client’s expectations & goals is paramount and I enjoy working with the team in ensuring these are always met. With regards to FATCA & CRS reporting, I have enjoyed working with a range of different people, from software providers to regulatory bodies, gaining a lot of knowledge & experience along the way.

Q4:  What have you learnt since joining KHT?

I’ve learnt not to cook fish in the microwave – or if I do, expect the (justified) stick that follows! In all seriousness, I’ve been fortunate enough to gain extensive Marine & Aviation industry knowledge, and I plan to continue to build on this through experience and professional studies.

Q5:  What are your goals/aspirations for the next 12 months?  Personal & Professional.

Personally, I want to continue to work hard for FC Isle of Man, a community-based football club where I am a regular squad member. This is the team’s first season competing within the North West Counties Division One (South) league, and KHT were kind enough to lend their support to the team and me personally via their player sponsorship scheme. The team is performing really well and we hope there will be promotion news in store at the end of the season!

On a professional note, KHT have also committed to support my career progression within the Marine & Aviation sector, with the opportunity to undertake a Diploma in Superyacht Management in the next 12 months.

Q6:  What keeps you busy outside of work?

Football takes the lion’s share of my time after work. FC IOM train twice a week at 6.30am before work with a game each Saturday – either at home (Isle of Man) or away to clubs in the North West. But when I do get down time I like to chill out and watch a movie or catch up with friends socially.
